A spent upper stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket impacted the Moon on 5 August 2026 after more than a year in space. The stage had launched in January 2025, carrying Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost lunar lander and ispace's Hakuto-R Mission 2 toward the Moon.

Unable to return to Earth after completing its mission, the rocket stage remained on a high-energy trajectory. Over time, gravitational perturbations altered its orbit, making a collision with the Moon unavoidable.

The impact occurred near Einstein Crater at a speed of approximately 8,700 km/h (5,400 mph). Scientists hoped to observe the event because it provides a rare opportunity to study the formation of an impact crater caused by a known artificial object and to better understand the behavior of lunar ejecta.

The incident has also renewed discussion about the growing amount of human-made debris beyond Earth orbit and the need for responsible management of space activities as lunar exploration accelerates.
