Not sure why I went back to the Founding Father outfit with Jack, but at this point, having started my political cartoons, I began to lose interest in the portraits and I moved my attention over to finishing off my GCSEs and the big Soviet leaders portrait.

It's a shame, though. Even though the prospect of including MrBeast was daunting and raised lots of questions about what it meant nowadays to be worth commemoration, even by a nobody like myself, there were so many other YouTubers I was ready to do. FRED was the first channel to reach over a million subscribers, Brookers was a notable early YouTuber, as was the vlogger geriatric1927 (look him up, his story is amazing), there was NicePeter and EpicLLOYD of ERB, Vsauce, Grace Helbig, etc. So many to do, but now, I'm comfortable with focusing on comics and political cartoons.

Doug Walker - Nostalgia Critic

Now this has become my favourite portrait of mine. Not only did I begin watching the Nostalgia Critic around the same time as the AVGN, but the way I was able to get the teeth right without it looking really uncanny, particularly back in 2021, is something I'm genuinely proud about. Go figure.

This used to be my favourite of the portraits, though that has recently changed to one later down the line. The forehead is particularly showing, and Ian (like most YouTubers) has changed his haircut quite a bit, so I had to settle on one.

James Rolfe - AVGN

Unlike PewDiePie, I was definitely a viewer of James Rolfe for years (though not an OG fan per se, I arrived later to the scene). If you can't tell, I drew Lincoln's body from his presidential photo, I assume due to how James started before YouTube, but wasn't a founder, so that meant he was best suited to a 19th century outfit? Either way, not bad.

Felix Kjellberg - PewDiePie

With the co-founders of YouTube out of the way, I had to move onto some YouTubers, and I figured the most natural place to start there (at least, at the time) was with PewDiePie. I was never much of a viewer of his content, and especially in hindsight, I definitely have conflicted opinions on him and including him as a portrait in the gallery. I was definitely ruling out certain YouTubers whose actions and views were unconscionable, and as I've debated returning to these portraits and whether to do MrBeast, that hang-up put me off continuing it. Still, what's done is done, and I'm still happy with the artwork.

Hurley, also one of the co-founders of YouTube, was the first CEO of the company from 2005 until 2010. Something you'll notice with Hurley, and the previous and next portrait is that I wanted to signify their status as a founder by dressing them up as a Founding Father. For consistency sake, if I was doing this today, I would have just put all them in suits, but oh well.

Jawed Karim ('jawed') is best known for the first YouTube video, 'me at the zoo'.

Here lies Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán. He's dead to the far-right now... and out of office! This is my latest Grettoon and he left the other day, so this reupload actually feels quite relevant. Anyway, it's been fun bringing the "greats" of political cartooning to life, including Nigel Farage, Elon Musk (who ISN'T Mark Wahlberg!), Vladimir Putin, Benjamin Netanyahu, and the one and only... Ferenc Szálasi. So please, pay your disrespects with Orbán's axis.

"The Backs The Books Are Balanced On"

Austerity has become a key topic of interest for me since starting university, and it's appalling to consider the hundreds of thousands of deaths it has contributed to, and the lives it has destroyed to save a quick buck and not pull the country out of debt. Tapping into the UK's anti-austerity movement and cost-of-living crisis, I decided to show people what 'balancing the books' effectively means. It's not healthy, and those backs are soon to break unless people stand up and demand proper change. The consensus on austerity must end.

"The Hand of Mazdak and Spirit of Iranians"

I've intended to cover Iran since the government protests began last December, and the subsequent massacres committed by the Islamic Republic. As Israeli-American imperialism threw its hat into the mix, I had to adapt the cartoon. After all, to this day, at the heart of this tragedy are the Iranians (e.g. the layers of this cartoon symbolising the chronological record of Iran's beautiful civilisation). Solidarity with them against the evils of the regimes seeking to subordinate them and plunge the rest of the world into destruction.

از زمان شروع اعتراضات دولتی در دسامبر گذشته و قتل عام‌های بعدی توسط جمهوری اسلامی، قصد داشتم ایران را پوشش دهم. از آنجایی که امپریالیسم اسرائیلی-آمریکایی وارد ماجرا شد، مجبور شدم این کارتون را اقتباس کنم. به هر حال، تا به امروز، در قلب این تراژدی، ایرانیان هستند (مثلاً لایه‌های این کارتون که نماد ثبت وقایع تمدن زیبای ایران است). همبستگی با آنها در برابر شرارت‌های رژیم‌هایی که به دنبال مطیع کردن آنها و فرو بردن بقیه جهان در ویرانی هستند.

Why is Peter Mandelson considered to be the 'Prince of Darkness'? Since this cartoon came out and Mandelson's arrest, reuploading this one has been more relevant than ever. If you're wondering, the title and approach is based on John Milton's 'Paradise Lost', where 'Prince of Darkness' refers to Satan. And I put that on full display (e.g. Satan's children, Sin and Death, represented by JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon - fitting name - and Morgan McSweeney).

"Monroe - Donroe - Gone Rogue"

Chronicling American imperialism in Latin America in the wake of the Trump regime's bombing of Venezuela and kidnapping of president Nicolás Maduro, I chose the case studies of Haiti, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Brazil and Chile, and the various ways the American Empire ideologically and materially dominated them. In addition, Trump, Maduro and María Corina Machado are front and centre, bringing light to the (then) contemporary news (e.g. them representing the shape of the Americas, and Trump siphoning VE - Venezuelan oil like the bloodsucker which he is).

"Andrea Egan in Unison With Her Comrades"

With the news of Andrea Egan being elected as general secretary of Unison, I think it's time to also spread my trade unionist wings as a proud member of Unite. The symbolism here came quite naturally, and drawing all of the picketers was a delight (e.g. including the children feeling a sense of hope and joy with good leadership showing a hopeful future). Let's hope Egan does what it takes to take the fight to Labour.

"Davie's Pentimento, Inquisitor and Antipope"

This cartoon depicts the crisis within the BBC and its director-general Tim Davie resigning over trumped up (fittingly) charges of editorial bias. As much as I despise the BBC over their complicity in the Palestinian genocide, the charges and everything about the scandal was so ridiculous, that it possessed me to really give it my all. I'm still really happy about how many details I managed to fit in (e.g. the references to the BBC's past like Test Card F in the painting, and the old iconography).

"Trotsky and Mercader Reflect 85 Years Later"

Having finished 'Grapevine', and my other comics project 'Police Sketchy' not going so well, I turned back to my political cartoons to keep me creatively stimulated. With the 85th anniversary of Leon Trotsky's assassination, and having worked within the Trotskyist movement when starting university, I figured I would commemorate the event with Trotsky and his assassin, Ramón Mercader (note the dishevelled wallpaper and general vibes on his side). Though quite a slapdash cartoon, I credit it for getting me into the swing of drawing more quickly, and doing cartoons to this day.

"What Do You See In This United European Culture?"

While studying Abderrahmane Sissako's 'Timbuktu' in A-Level Film Studies, I was confronted with the issue of how often African culture is reduced down to simplistic imagery, as if the same could possibly be done for Europeans. To illustrate this, I combined a series of European garb and outfits, as they clash together in what's frankly been a good depiction of relations within Europe. This was also the last political cartoon I did in a while, as I moved onto 'Grapevine' as a new comics project.

"Trump and Bolsonaro at Democracy's "Worth It Summit""

I would say this is my first truly contemporary political cartoon, but that would be an indictment of how slow I used to be. For reference, the Brasília insurrection was on 8th January. Oh well, at least I got better. Since then, comparing it with January 6th was always on my mind since the start of 2023, and to be blunt, there are more than a few patterns to call out (e.g. note the Confederate and imperial Brazilian flags, both flown during their respective putsches). Especially between Trump and Bolsonaro.

"The Socialist Reformation"

This is the first (and so far only, but don't confirm that) cartoon to be included with a poem. Sticking to my anti-Stalinist leftist focus, as well as my intent to to show how neither Marxism–Leninism and capitalism are good, democratic systems to live under (hope that realisation is coming along well for people). And as for the use of religion, I don't have much of a reason, I just thought it would be a neat motif. Anyway, enjoy the poem!

"Our Soviet Leaders' (Reluctant) Family Photo"

Keeping within the focus of political history (based on my interests and studies in A-Level History and Government & Politics), I turned towards the leaders of the Soviet Union, imagining them in the context of a family photo and interweaving various Easter eggs of Soviet history (e.g. Khrushchev's shoe-banging incident). To this day, it's the only cartoon I have framed, and I think for good reason.

"Our "Correction" Courtesy of Comrades of Stalin"

My first political cartoon, dealing with the "Anti-Katyn" campaign to deny Soviet responsibility for the Katyn massacre during World War II. Completed over a lengthy period as I was learning the ropes of cartooning, character design and symbolism (e.g. the German, Polish and Russian girls in order geographically reflecting Nazi Germany, Poland and the Soviet Union). In hindsight, I consider it to also reflect the growing pains of my developing style, but I'm still proud of it.
