"Channel of Transformation"

Now the first cartoon I'm uploading to toonpool.com around the same time as when I'm uploading everywhere else (though it's often just Instagram, so do please follow there). I'm happy to have caught up and am looking to expand my presence in the cartooning world. If you like this cartoon and others I've made, I greatly appreciate the support!

For context, a semi-common talking point from reactionary provocateurs is the desire to shoot refugees coming from boats from the White Cliffs of Dover. Zack Polanski in his Green leadership bid spoke about how he came across one such case. To be clear, I'm sure most of these are just fascist wet dreams, but it remains worth showcasing what that looks like in practice, and how the English Channel provides people with the opportunity to transform their lives and exercise the power of death at the UK border.

"Queer Harmers"

While working on ideas for subsequent Necroparliaments, I realised that Sunday was International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. With queer necropolitics being a major subject which I have been trying to cover for ages in the series, and LGBTQ+ rights plummeting in the UK, I think it was worth making this a top priority.

For context, Starmer has been pejoratively referred to as 'Queer Harmer' for his attacks on LGBTQ+ rights for opportunistic reasons. But with him potentially outgoing, I wanted to signify that even without Starmer, there's a whole apparatus of institutions and reactionaries ready and willing to pose a threat to the community, especially transgender people.

"Age of Austerity"

Now we come up to roughly when I started posting my cartoons to toonpool.com. This was my final comic before dedicating my final efforts to the uni assessments before summer break. It also - for now - completes the roster of undead creatures I'm playing with throughout the series. Zombies symbolise those who have become politically disaffected, disinformed and complacent with being taken advantage of. Given that I'm mainly using them for reactionaries, there's also the parallel with Reform as vampires.

For context, the term 'age of austerity' was spoken by former Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron, whose austerity programme has been almost ongoing ever since (including into Labour, pretending otherwise doesn't change things). The point of this comic is to show the timeline of what that looks like. Once you come out of the facts and figures alluded to in Grettoon 012, this is what it's like to live under austerity. To be deprived of resources, to have people hopeless and zombified, promoting right-wing populism as a non-solution. Domestic violence shelters are defunded, homelessness increases and poverty worsens. That's the reality, and it needs to be presented coldly and clearly.

"Pharmakon for Iran"

With the previous two issues out of the way, I was preparing to cover Iran. By the time I got round to it, the "ceasefire" was announced and I figured that I could portray this as more of an aftermath, as Starmer tries to justify the government's limited involvement in aiding the U.S. in war crimes in the Middle East. Wouldn't be the first time.

The context for Starmer's line in the middle came from Simon Dudley, Reform's former housing spokesperson who justified the lives lost in the Grenfell Tower fire in his attack against safety regulations. I will say that the term 'pharmakon' came up while reading 'Necropolitics' by Mbembe, and I wanted to fit that in somewhere. Also, I've decided to make Canada's Liberals skeletons as they're adjacent to Labour, and quite frankly, Spain's PSOE and Sánchez are doing well on their own, so they will be spared from undead depictions.

"Mahmood's Panopticon"

Returning to Labour, I had recently come out of assessments and was ready to get back into the game for Easter break. While doing so, I was working on an essay about Foucault and his commentary on the panopticon. I figured this would make great material, as the concept also arises in Mbembe's discussion of necropolitics.

For context, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has stated her preference for the panopticon, as well as other forms of surveillance. The point here is to show what she considers targets that she really shouldn't, and the outside consequences of these actions in the rest of the world.

"Loyal Opposition"

I wasn't sure how exactly to incorporate the monarchy into the series, though they are still related to Parliament and have a lot more political and sociocultural power than what some monarchists let on. I'm depicting them as liches to show how they're defying death as an institution since Elizabeth II, and how their power is tied to an object. And yes, the Crown is a concept and not referring to the hat, but that's where Charles III and his family draw their power and influence from.

For context, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor's royal titles were removed at the time, but the Israeli-American strikes on Iran were also in the spotlight. I was making Grettoon 006 for that, but I didn't want to leave this story out of the picture, and it's worth framing the surrounding events as inadvertently obscuring the monarchy's complicity in harbouring child sexual abuse before it's too late.

"Values, Voice and Virtue"

With the Gorton and Denton by-election being literally right around the corner, I figured this would be an appropriate time to discuss the elephant in the room: what about the Greens? They're a tricky one, as they're the best option for the UK, but they still have shortcomings. That's why I'm depicting them in torn-up green robes, symbolising their rugged qualities amid their transition to a more left-wing alternative, and because I want to distinguish them from the undead.

There isn't a lot of context outside of the by-election, except that the title comes from Matt Goodwin's (the Reform candidate) book, where he stupidly claims that cultural movements are running the show in UK politics as opposed to economic elites. Oh, and I might as well throw it out here, but the Liberal Democrats are mummies to represent feat of the unknown and not letting the past go. They just kind of hang around in the political landscape, and I won't pay much attention to them.

"Iron Law"

When it came time to branching out beyond the UK in the series, my go-to place was the U.S., but I wanted to be careful not to centralise America, more specifically Trump, in what is meant to be a British-focused series commenting on domestic politics and trends. That said, whenever Americanisation can come up, I'll want to talk about that, and this does allow me to depict Republicans as demons, with Trump as Satan.

I don't think I need much of an explanation for that, so for context, there isn't much, really. The local elections were months away, and what I wanted to do was signify how voters need to learn from how the far-right don't have solutions for them, and giving them a chance without thinking about it is tantamount to a kid touching the iron.

"Psychodrama"

This one is a lot more about Labour, and the first to feature Keir Starmer. If things play out as expected over the next few weeks, he won't be sticking around for long. I chose to depict Labour politicians as skeletons due to how under Starmer, their policies and reputation are barebone. Not to mention how the party has undergone rebirth a number of times in recent decades, and that they serve as a reminder for mortality, since they're on the way out along with the Tories.

The context for this is much more relevant to current events. This was about Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham being blocked from standing in the Gorton and Denton by-election, which will come up later. The term 'psychodrama' was thrown about by supporters of this decision who wanted the fiasco to be over with, so that they could then go on to lose to the Greens.

"Rescue Charity"

As you can see last issue, one of the main gimmicks of this series is depicting UK politicians in various forms of the undead. I'll get more into Labour next issue, but Conservatives are ghosts for representing what once was (themselves after being crushed in the 2024 General Election) and the lingering trauma of neoliberalism and right-wing politics which can be traced back to them. Depicting Reform UK as vampires is something I may have done in the past, but with them posing the main threat to UK politics now, I think saving the bloodsucking exploiters for the far-right is fitting.

For context, there was a wave of Conservative defections to Reform, leading to Farage coming out and urging people that the party isn't becoming a 'rescue charity' for Tories. Yeah, okay.

"Thiel's Necktie"

I began Necroparliament last December while working on my studies and discovering the works of Cameroonian philosopher Achille Mbembe, who came up with the necropolitics to describe the political power of institutions, figures and society to kill and to let die. I think this translates very well to UK politics and history, and it serves as a nice philosophy exercise to further integrate my university studies into my own work.

For context (since this was half a year ago), Palantir chairman Peter Thiel, a fascist allied with the Trump regime, complicit in the Palestinian genocide and Epstein associate called for public executions to be brought back as a sign of 'masculine leadership'. Palantir is also a major contractor with the NHS and has admitted to conspiring to undermine political resistance to the service's privatisation.

By the way, ignore the misspelling of Palantir, I checked that a dozen times and somehow still got it wrong.

Not sure why I went back to the Founding Father outfit with Jack, but at this point, having started my political cartoons, I began to lose interest in the portraits and I moved my attention over to finishing off my GCSEs and the big Soviet leaders portrait.

It's a shame, though. Even though the prospect of including MrBeast was daunting and raised lots of questions about what it meant nowadays to be worth commemoration, even by a nobody like myself, there were so many other YouTubers I was ready to do. FRED was the first channel to reach over a million subscribers, Brookers was a notable early YouTuber, as was the vlogger geriatric1927 (look him up, his story is amazing), there was NicePeter and EpicLLOYD of ERB, Vsauce, Grace Helbig, etc. So many to do, but now, I'm comfortable with focusing on comics and political cartoons.

Now this has become my favourite portrait of mine. Not only did I begin watching the Nostalgia Critic around the same time as the AVGN, but the way I was able to get the teeth right without it looking really uncanny, particularly back in 2021, is something I'm genuinely proud about. Go figure.

Unlike PewDiePie, I was definitely a viewer of James Rolfe for years (though not an OG fan per se, I arrived later to the scene). If you can't tell, I drew Lincoln's body from his presidential photo, I assume due to how James started before YouTube, but wasn't a founder, so that meant he was best suited to a 19th century outfit? Either way, not bad.

With the co-founders of YouTube out of the way, I had to move onto some YouTubers, and I figured the most natural place to start there (at least, at the time) was with PewDiePie. I was never much of a viewer of his content, and especially in hindsight, I definitely have conflicted opinions on him and including him as a portrait in the gallery. I was definitely ruling out certain YouTubers whose actions and views were unconscionable, and as I've debated returning to these portraits and whether to do MrBeast, that hang-up put me off continuing it. Still, what's done is done, and I'm still happy with the artwork.

Hurley, also one of the co-founders of YouTube, was the first CEO of the company from 2005 until 2010. Something you'll notice with Hurley, and the previous and next portrait is that I wanted to signify their status as a founder by dressing them up as a Founding Father. For consistency sake, if I was doing this today, I would have just put all them in suits, but oh well.

Here lies Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán. He's dead to the far-right now... and out of office! This is my latest Grettoon and he left the other day, so this reupload actually feels quite relevant. Anyway, it's been fun bringing the "greats" of political cartooning to life, including Nigel Farage, Elon Musk (who ISN'T Mark Wahlberg!), Vladimir Putin, Benjamin Netanyahu, and the one and only... Ferenc Szálasi. So please, pay your disrespects with Orbán's axis.

"The Backs The Books Are Balanced On"

Austerity has become a key topic of interest for me since starting university, and it's appalling to consider the hundreds of thousands of deaths it has contributed to, and the lives it has destroyed to save a quick buck and not pull the country out of debt. Tapping into the UK's anti-austerity movement and cost-of-living crisis, I decided to show people what 'balancing the books' effectively means. It's not healthy, and those backs are soon to break unless people stand up and demand proper change. The consensus on austerity must end.

"The Hand of Mazdak and Spirit of Iranians"

I've intended to cover Iran since the government protests began last December, and the subsequent massacres committed by the Islamic Republic. As Israeli-American imperialism threw its hat into the mix, I had to adapt the cartoon. After all, to this day, at the heart of this tragedy are the Iranians (e.g. the layers of this cartoon symbolising the chronological record of Iran's beautiful civilisation). Solidarity with them against the evils of the regimes seeking to subordinate them and plunge the rest of the world into destruction.

از زمان شروع اعتراضات دولتی در دسامبر گذشته و قتل عام‌های بعدی توسط جمهوری اسلامی، قصد داشتم ایران را پوشش دهم. از آنجایی که امپریالیسم اسرائیلی-آمریکایی وارد ماجرا شد، مجبور شدم این کارتون را اقتباس کنم. به هر حال، تا به امروز، در قلب این تراژدی، ایرانیان هستند (مثلاً لایه‌های این کارتون که نماد ثبت وقایع تمدن زیبای ایران است). همبستگی با آنها در برابر شرارت‌های رژیم‌هایی که به دنبال مطیع کردن آنها و فرو بردن بقیه جهان در ویرانی هستند.

در ابتدا در ۳ مارس ۲۰۲۶ ایجاد شد.
