Yeah, it's time to spread the holiday cheer and smile no matter what. But no getting around it, this Christmas might be a bit leaner and more hollow than previous years. Thus, "A Potemkin Christmas."

Thanks Mike. My (and I think most serious editorial cartoonists) intention is to get a smile or a laugh out of our audience, but more importantly to get people to think. The stuff people don't want to see is often what they NEED to see. Unfortunately, a collision of poor spending habits, bad credit, and a cratered economy contribute to the kind of scenario you mention. The real question is: as folks weather the current economic storm, will they take some accountability for their situations, or will they continue with short term thinking and a tendency to point fingers when things go wrong?

Love your work, but I feel motivated to find the economics in it. When consumers use a credit card, they are making the choice to consume now and give something up later--in this case Christmas. The choice to consume now comes at a cost and for this family, bankruptcy and no Christmas. The kids get hurt and that's wrong. It's sad that our choices have unintended consequences. Thanks for your inspiration.
